The European Commission has asked Belgium to provide further details about its planned regulation measures for the country's broadcasting and broadband Internet markets, due to a number of competition concerns, the commission said Tuesday.

Belgium's plans would oblige telecommunications company Belgacom SA (BELG.BT) and cable operators Telenet Group Holding NV (TNET.BT), Brutele, Numericable, Tecteo and AIESH to give competitors access to their respective broadband and cable networks.

The commission, which has antitrust powers in the European Union, is asking Belgian regulators to take full account of market developments in both markets and to further substantiate and justify its reasoning with regard to the broadcasting market.

"Regulators have to carefully examine market developments and avoid imposing disproportionate obligations on market operators, as this may create unnecessary burdens and ultimately stifle investment and innovation," EU digital agenda commissioner Neelie Kroes said in a statement. "The commission has therefore asked the Belgian regulators to carefully examine the competitive conditions in the markets concerned and provide further evidence for their proposed measures."
