SINGAPORE, Oct. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ - Zecotek Photonics Inc. (TSX-V: ZMS; Frankfurt: W1I.F), a developer of leading-edge photonics technologies for industrial, healthcare and scientific markets, today announced today announced the recent publication by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) of two new strategic patents covering more advanced variants of its flagship lutetium-based LFS scintillation crystals and solid-state MAPD photo-detector arrays. The compositions and variants of Zecotek's existing LFS crystals, are used as single elements, arrays and plates for a wide spectrum of applications.

"Our scientists have developed more advanced LFS crystal formulations to support the Integrated Detector Modules for new configurations of PET scanner designs. The modules are configured by our partner Hamamatsu," said Dr. A.F. Zerrouk, Chairman, President, and CEO of Zecotek Photonics Inc. "Our latest LFS crystal variants have tunable emission maxima for optimal coupling with our upgraded version of MAPD photo-detectors to be used in Time Of Flight PET scanners and High Energy Physics at CERN."

Dr. Zerrouk further added, "protecting our intellectual property is of utmost importance - and these two new patent filings further strengthen our IP position on these pioneering technologies and provide more advantageous, secure and cost effective alternatives for a substantial and fast growing market."

About Zecotek's LFS Crystals
Zecotek's patented Lutetium Fine Silicate (LFS) scintillation crystals (US Patent No. 7,132,060) possess exceptional combinations of high light yield, ultra-fast fast decay times, and enhanced radiation hardness.  As verified by independent laboratories and research centers around the world, Zecotek's LFS crystals are by far the brightest and fastest lutetium-based scintillation crystals on the market today, besides being the most practical scintillation crystals for medical, scientific and industrial imaging. Zecotek's Russian pioneering scientists have mastered the art of altering the optical emission centres within lutetium silicate host crystals to achieve a wide range of desirable physical parameters tunable to specific industrial needs and applications. All this is augmented by the ability of Zecotek to supply the LFS crystal with guaranteed competitive cost, high quality in a variety of dimensions and shapes, through its manufacturer BOET of Beijing, China.

About Zecotek's MAPD Photo Detectors
Zecotek's patented solid-state Multi-pixel Avalanche Photo-Diode (MAPD) arrays (US Patent No. 8,742,543) are advanced high-performance solid-state photo detectors for registering various light intensities within the wavelength range from UV to near IR.  Zecotek's solid-state MAPD is designed to replace the earlier photo-detection technologies now used in areas such as high energy physics, astronomy, medical diagnostics, pharmaceutical research, and other areas of industry, security, and defense.  In particular, the MAPD offers a more robust, sensitive, and cost effective replacement for the Photo Multiplying Tube (photomultiplier or PMT) as well as other so named SiPM's used in PET (Positron Emission Tomography).
