Intermec Technologies Corp.: -- Multi-protocol capabilities support
EPCglobal Gen 2, Gen 1 and ISO-based RFID systems -- Available for
order worldwide Sept. 1 Intermec Technologies Corp. and METRO Group
today announced the successful demonstration of the first EPCglobal
Generation 2 RFID handheld reader that also meets stringent
European requirements for radio frequency and reader communications
protocols. The new multi-protocol Intermec IP4 Intellitag(R)
multi-protocol RFID reader reads Gen 2 tags from multiple
manufacturers. It also reads tags based on all major global RFID
standards, including EPCglobal Gen 2, Gen 1 and ISO 18000-6b, with
a migration path to the emerging ISO 18000-6c standard. "METRO
Group and its suppliers already are experiencing the benefits of
RFID," Dr. Wolfram said. "METRO and Intermec believe the
capabilities of Generation 2 promise even greater business benefits
to retail supply chains worldwide." Intermec's IP4 Intellitag
reader, an accessory handle for attachment to the popular
Intermec(R) 700 Series Color mobile computers, delivers
first-of-its-kind capability by combining the power of a handheld
mobile computing device equipped with PAN, LAN and WAN radios, as
well as a multi-protocol RFID radio that can be used worldwide.
Intermec RFID readers are the first Generation 2 readers to meet
the European ETSI 302 208 standard, which gives European customers
increased RFID read ranges. The IP4 will be available for order
worldwide Sept. 1 for production deliveries in November. RFID is a
complement to industry's current bar code-based tracking systems,
allowing companies to automatically track inventory throughout an
entire supply chain. RFID automatic data collection typically does
not require line of sight or manual scanning as do most bar
code-based systems. For example, information from RFID-tagged cases
on a pallet can be read automatically using fixed, mobile or
handheld readers rather than requiring individual bar code
scanning. Read/write RFID tags and labels can be reprogrammed to
update the information on each tag as it proceeds through
manufacturing and supply chain processes, providing new levels of
up-to-date information for timely decision making. About Intermec
