Sime Darby Bhd. (4197.KU) is expanding its oil-and-fats division in South Africa by setting up a packaging and refining facility, state news agency Bernama reported Friday.

The Malaysia-listed company's South African unit, Sime Darby Hudson & Knight Pty. Ltd., is in the final stage of preparation for the packaging facility, Bernama said, quoting an unnamed Sime Darby company executive.

The report didn't elaborate on the timeframe for the capacity expansion in the country.

Sime Darby Hudson & Knight's refinery is operating at 80% of its 160,000-ton capacity. About half of its refinery output caters to food giant Unilever N.V.(UN), Bernama said.

Sime Darby is Malaysia's largest listed plantation firm by acreage and is a major investor in oils and fats in the African region. It is developing 220,000 hectares of rubber and oil palm plantations in Liberia.
