Clayton, Dubilier & Rice Monday said that Sonja Terraneo, former partner and Global Head of Industrials at London-based Permira, is joining the New York-based private equity firm to focus on sourcing European deals.

Based in the London office, Terraneo will also structure manage investments for the team.

"We are delighted to welcome Sonja to the firm where she will both complement and strengthen our European investment team," said David Novak, partner at CD&R in London.

"She has considerable experience, a proven track record and a strong network in industrial segments and European countries that are a focus for the firm," he added.

CD&R has historically distinguished itself from other private equity firms with its strong emphasis on operational improvements, a strategy now having to be adopted by the industry generally as leverage for buyouts and profit is no longer guaranteed. CD&R's operating partners already include Jack Welch, former chairman and chief executive of General Electric Co. (GE) and Vindi Banga, former member of the Unilever PLC (UL) Executive Board.

CD&R's European investments include Rexel, the leading global distributor of electrical supplies, VWR International, a leading global distributor of laboratory supplies acquired from Merck KGaA (MKGAY) and Brakes, a large food service supplier in the U.K. and France.
