The Chamber’s selection of Mr. Converse as the recipient of its top business award was based on his dedication and exemplary leadership in the business community. From the time he joined VCB as its CEO in 1994, the Bank has grown under his leadership from two branches with $54 million in assets to what is now Northern Virginia’s largest community bank with over $2.9 billion in assets, 28 branches, a residential mortgage lending office and a wealth management services department. Mr. Converse joins a distinguished list of honored business leaders since the awards program began in 1994.

As the CEO of a publicly traded company, Mr. Converse has set the tone for corporate philanthropy within the communities Virginia Commerce Bank serves. In particular, he has been an ardent supporter of the Small Business Development Council (SBDC), as demonstrated by the Bank’s total contributions of $163,000 over the past decade to foster business development in Alexandria. Additionally, he has encouraged VCB employees to dedicate their time and talents to non-profit organizations including Rebuilding Together Alexandria, the Marine Corps Toys for Tots, the City of Alexandria’s Sharing Program and SHARE, as well as Leadership Alexandria. This is evidenced by employees contributing 2,785 volunteer hours to the Alexandria community in 2010. Mr. Converse’s civic influence is manifested bank-wide, and this fiscal and social commitment to its markets prompted the Washington Business Journal to include VCB in its prestigious 2010 philanthropy awards recognizing the achievements of Most Volunteer Hours, totaling over 7,500 hours, and Most Corporate Giving.

“I am deeply honored to receive this recognition from the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce on behalf of all of the Bank’s employees who so capably serve this community,” said Peter Converse. “We remain dedicated to supporting Alexandria through our delivery of business and personal financial solutions as well as through our passion for community service and philanthropy, thereby fulfilling our commitment to ‘Making the Difference’ in the communities we serve.”

Mr. Converse is a 1972 graduate of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia and completed banking programs at the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University, and the American Bankers’ Association National and Graduate Compliance Schools. He has more than 37 years of banking experience in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Mr. Converse is currently a Director and member of the Employed Physicians Oversight Committee and the Foundation Leadership Council for Virginia Hospital Center, as well as a member of the Community Advisory Committee for the Arlington Free Clinic.
