Kennedy's Frontiers in Healthcare Dr. Jeff Bauer to Offer Insight
on Transforming the Healthcare Delivery System Through the Use of
Information Technology SOUTHFIELD, Mich., June 7
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In response to a growing emphasis on
healthcare information technology -- initiated by three Institute
of Medicine reports on the quality of care, then reinforced by
President Bush's recent push for a national electronic medical
record system within 10 years and appointment of the first
healthcare IT czar -- Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy (D-R.I.) will
host the first annual Frontiers in Healthcare symposium on June 21
at Brown University in Providence, R.I. Speaking at the conference,
centered on the theme of "transforming healthcare for the 21st
century," will be Jeffrey C. Bauer, Ph.D., a nationally recognized

panel titled "Bringing Health Information to Scale," which will
explore policy ideas for expediting the widespread adoption of
healthcare IT and creation of a national health information
infrastructure. He will specifically address federal grants and
loans available to help create new regional health networks and
support and expand existing networks. "This symposium will
highlight practical ways to turn vision into reality," Dr. Bauer
said. "Everyone agrees that the electronic medical record is an
idea whose time has come. I will be one of several speakers
identifying actions that can be taken to move from plans to results
in a timely manner." Also on the agenda is former House Speaker
Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), founder of the Center for Health
Transformation, who recently partnered with Rep. Kennedy to sponsor
legislation, tentatively titled "The Quality, Efficiency,
Standards, and Technology for Healthcare Transformation Act
(QUEST)," designed to promote IT as a means of improving healthcare
and cutting costs. Gingrich will deliver the keynote address at the
conference. The conference will also address best practices in
healthcare, and delve into how payers and providers can change
reimbursement practices to make healthcare delivery more efficient
while reducing preventable medical errors. Other panel discussions
