RCN Corporation (NASDAQ: RCNI) announced today that Strategic
External Affairs & Programming Senior Vice President Richard
Ramlall won a 2010 Stevie Award in the Communications or PR
Campaign of the Year -- Multicultural category in the 8th Annual
American Business Awards.
RCN Corporation is a leading provider of all-digital and high
definition video, high-speed Internet, and premium voice services
to residential and small-medium business customers in Philadelphia
and Lehigh Valley, PA, New York City, Boston, Chicago and
Washington, D.C., as well as high-capacity transport services to
carrier and large enterprise customers.
The award was presented last night during ceremonies at the
Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. The ceremonies were hosted
by Cheryl Casone of Fox Business Network and broadcast nationwide
on radio by the Business TalkRadio Network.
In accepting the Stevie, Ramlall said, "I'd like to thank our
CEO, Pete Aquino, who understood the importance of international
programming, due to his experience as a president of one of the
first triple play companies in Venezuela. Aquino led the charge for
RCN's digital conversion. Thanks to his vision, RCN converted to an
all-digital TV network, expanding our available bandwidth, so we
were able to launch an aggressive push to add and promote
international and multicultural programming, which research showed
had a lot of pent up demand in RCN's markets."
Aquino and Ramlall identified that international was a critical
area of growth for the RCN markets. Within 18 months, Ramlall and
Aleisha Bozin, Sr. Programming Manager, negotiated over 50 new
international contracts, increasing the international channel
offerings by over 50 percent. An extensive, integrated
marketing/advertising/PR/programming campaign was developed and
successfully implemented. Partnering closely with its new
international channels, RCN's multicultural campaigns dramatically
increased the number of unique international channel subscribers by
22 percent and international revenue by 25 percent. One channel
grew to more than 1,000 subscribers in only months.
"Thanks to these campaigns, the international take rate has
dramatically increased by 65 percent and it has been one of the
fastest growing segments in our cable network," said RCN President
& CEO Peter Aquino. "Richard's accomplishments and achievements
at RCN are truly deserving of such recognition, and we congratulate
and thank him, Aleisha and the PR/marketing team for their hard
work and dedication."
Stevie Awards were presented in over 40 categories and more than
2,700 entries from organizations of all sizes and in virtually
every industry were submitted for consideration. More than 200
executives across the country participated in the judging process
to determine the finalists and Stevie Award winners.
"I'm honored and grateful to win a Stevie Award, and I share
this award with our President & CEO Pete Aquino and the entire
RCN team," Ramlall said. "We'd also like to thank our international
programming partners who have contributed more than $2 million in
marketing support."
RCN now has more than 500 international viewing choices (an
increase of 300 since January 2009) including more than 100 linear
channels, available in 20 different packages and covering 15
different language groups, which surpasses many other competitor
offerings.
In addition to this Stevie and others in prior years, Ramlall
recently won two awards in the 2010 Bulldog Reporter Awards for
Excellence in Media and Public Relations, receiving the gold award
as Corporate PR Professional of the Year and the silver award as
Public Affairs Professional of the Year. He was also recognized by
the National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications
(NAMIC) in its 2009 Excellence in Multi-Cultural Awards competition
that showcases top marketing tactics and case studies/campaigns
targeted to multi-cultural audiences. Ramlall was also recognized
at the NAMIC conference for being one of CableFAX: The Magazine's
2009 Top 100 Most Influential Minorities in Cable.
