NEC Corporation of America (NEC), a leading technology provider of IT, network and identity management solutions, announced today the North American availability of its SpectralWave MW0500-series, a Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) service delivery platform for metropolitan access and cable networks. All configurations of the MW-0500-series provide an economical, eco-friendly and easy-to-deploy solution for a wide variety of managed wavelength service delivery needs, including: storage-area networking, fiber channel relief, IP offloading and high-speed optical Ethernet transport. NECs MW0500-series has been successfully deployed in carrier and cable networks around the world. Leveraging this global success, NEC has brought the MW0500-series to North America to meet operator demand for low cost transport systems that could deliver existing services without much added expense, and also provide transparent integration across metro-access, metro-core and long-haul networks. Delivering extra bandwidth at a fraction of traditional optical platform cost, the MW0500-series is a strong complement to NECs Generation Free Networking suite of optical networking solutions that allow operators the ability to integrate new optical elements to dynamically right-size their networks. In North America, NEC will target metro access networks where the demand for low-cost alternatives to add capacity is needed in order to overcome bottlenecks that exist beyond the last mile. NEC will also focus on the cable and smaller distribution access networks serving small businesses and larger residential applications, such as the delivery of Video on Demand and Fiber to the Curb. Weanticipate significant growth for the MW0500-series, said Rocky Kler, vice president and general manager, Optical Network Systems Division, NEC Corporation of America. We believe our MW0500-series will be well-received by operators as it providesflexibilityand cost points especially in the Ethernet and10G segment." The NEC MW0500-series is compact, can transmit up to four bi-directional wavelengths over a single fiber core and is available in two system offerings: SpectralWave MW0521 is a 19-inch rack-mountable 1RU system for point-to-point applications. It can be equipped for transmission of up to four 2.5G lambdas or two 10G lambdas. Available transponders include single-channel OC-48/STM-16, two-channel GbE muxponder, single-channel OC 192/STM-64, single-channel 10GbE, and a Free-Rate transponder. The Free-Rate transponder supports lower SONET (Synchronous Optical Network) / SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) rates and Fiber Channel. Transponders can operate independently over separate fibers, or in conjunction with an integrated CWDM filter module to provide bidirectional, single-fiber transmission. SpectralWave MW0522 utilizes the same transponder set and CWDM filter modules as the MW0521, but provides twice the capacity (40G) in a 2U rack space. In addition, MW0522 can operate in point-to-point, linear OADM (Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer), or OADM ring configuration to provide maximum deployment flexibility. Key operator benefits include reduced operating costs with a 1U / 2U type offering, which provides optics savings from lower power consumption and reduced space requirements. In addition, with support for bi-directional transmission, NEC reduces operator leased fiber costs. Other benefits include the systems support of Ethernet network applications, where it delivers enhanced bandwidth by transmitting Gbit / 10Gbit Ethernet transparently.
