Blood management experts from Strategic Healthcare Group LLC (www.bloodmanagement.com), the leading provider of blood management consulting, education and informatics solutions, will speak at the 2012 AABB Annual Meeting & CTTXPO, being held October 6-9 in Boston.

The AABB Annual Meeting & CTTXPO is for healthcare professionals interested in learning the latest in blood banking, transfusion medicine and cellular therapies. It will be held at the Boston Convention Center.

Susann Nienhaus, RN, JD, director of risk management and patient safety at Strategic Healthcare Group, will speak about "The Nursing Perspective of Transfusion Informed Consent" on October 6. Nienhaus, a registered nurse and attorney, spent nearly 20 years as a cardiovascular surgical nurse. In 1990, she was among the first to achieve certification as a Registered Nurse First Assistant from the Association of Operating Room Nurses. In 1999, Nienhaus earned a law degree from the Indiana University School of Law, where she was an editor of the International and Comparative Law Review and received the Jordan Constitutional Law Award. As director of risk management at St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital from 2002 through 2007, Nienhaus developed and implemented a patient safety program that combined quality improvement initiatives and risk reduction efforts to improve departmental efficiencies and prevent healthcare errors.

Joseph Thomas, RN, BSN, vice president of program services at Strategic Healthcare Group, will present two sessions: "Clinical and Quality: Partnering to Improve Blood Management and Patient Outcomes," on October 6 and "Clinical Underrecognition and Underreporting of Transfusion Reactions: The Dilemma Continues," on October 8. Thomas has clinical experience in both critical care nursing and blood management program development. In 2002 he developed a nationally recognized program built around safer, more evidence-based blood utilization. He served as director of blood management for the Western Region of the Cleveland Clinic Health System until joining Strategic Healthcare Group in 2007. Over the past decade, he has educated and mentored thousands of clinicians on transfusion related topics and worked with more than 100 hospitals throughout the country. Thomas also will be monitoring two sessions.
