The State of Maine’s Online Hunting and Fishing License service (www.maine.gov/huntandfish) has been enhanced to streamline the purchasing process and add the ability to use the service on mobile devices.

The service now provides the capability for users to purchase licenses for up to three people in one transaction, eliminating the need to supply your credit card number multiple times when purchasing for friends or family. If a user is purchasing a license as a gift, they are given the option of providing a special message, which will be emailed directly to the recipient along with the link to the license. Emails will be sent immediately following the payment, or the user can specify a future date to send.

In addition to the new purchasing options, the updated service has also decreased the number of steps it takes to make a purchase and clarified the instructions on how to complete various fields, including an individuals’ hunter safety information.

“This enhancement eliminates unnecessary steps and presents new purchasing options,” commented Bill Swan, Director of Licensing for Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. “We have listened to user feedback over the years regarding the service and this update gave us the opportunity to implement some changes based on that feedback and to improve the customer experience.”

The new version of the online service has been redesigned to work on any screen size so that citizens can easily purchase their license on smartphones, tablets, laptops or desktop computers.

“Mobile availability is no longer an afterthought when creating an online service or website, it’s becoming a necessity,” stated Maine’s Chief Technology Officer Greg McNeal. “Individuals now expect the ability to access information or a service from wherever they are, and this enhancement greatly increases that accessibility.”

The hunting and fishing license service has continued to grow since its original launch back in 2003. Each year, roughly 40% of the hunting and fishing licenses sold in Maine are purchased online, accounting for over 1.45 million license sales to date.

The online service was developed at no cost to Maine taxpayers and was created by Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, in partnership with the state’s eGovernment portal provider, InforME, and the Maine Office of Information Technology.
