The Colorado Sex Offender Mapping Application (SOMA) received a
2015 Communicator Award of Distinction in the category of
Government Websites.
The award caps a two-year collaboration effort between the
Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and Colorado
Interactive.
"To be involved in a project that impacts the safety of our
state and communities is very rewarding,” said Fred Sargeson,
Colorado Interactive general manager. “We were thrilled to be part
of the team delivering this important technology for the citizens
of Colorado."
The project delivered a mobile-ready, device-agnostic
experience, and now includes a notification module allowing users
to receive notifications if a sex offender moves into zip code
areas they have added to their “Watch List.” Users are now notified
via email on a weekly basis of changes that occur once they have
registered for notifications on the SOMA site. The overhauled
website also offers images of the sex offenders, as well as
detailed conviction information.
The new system improves the ability of law enforcement to share
information. The site also reduces repeat data entry of historical
information about the sex offender, such as previous addresses,
which remains in the system. The sex offender registry also allows
law enforcement to collect additional information in support of the
website improvements, such as conviction information.
Implementation of the new website ensures the state is in
compliance with the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act
(SORNA), which is Title 1 of the Adam Walsh Act.
The Communicator Awards is the leading international awards
program honoring creative excellence for communication
professionals. This year, thousands of entries were received from
companies and agencies of all sizes, making it one of the largest
awards of its kind in the world. Visit www.communicatorawards.com
