New mobile solution saves time and eliminates a
manual process
The Tennessee Highway Patrol has adopted an innovative approach
of conducting inspections on vehicles used for transporting
children to school or day care. The inspectors now use a
custom-developed mobile app to improve on the manual process of
inspections, and a companion Web application for administration and
viewing trends in inspections.
The Web application also supports vehicle owners, such as school
districts and day care facilities, who can view inspection data
that will allow them to be more pro-active in managing inspections.
Two state agencies, the Department of Education and the Department
of Human Services, also have the capability to view summaries of
school buses and day care buses, respectively.
The mobile app, which inspectors carry to the vehicle sites,
scans the VIN for identification, collects the inspection data,
takes photos, and assigns the annual compliance stickers. The time
saved by replacing the former manual process can be redirected to
follow up and compliance efforts.
The administration Web application gives the Tennessee Highway
Patrol the ability to measure inspections efficiency, and it also
helps identify potential regulatory and compliance risks. Reports
can detail which areas of compliance are consistently in need of
improvement so that preventive measures can be taken.
The mobile app and the Web administration application was
developed by NIC, Inc., Tennessee’s eGovernment partner since
2000.
