Beautiful imagery, adaptive design and
swipeable content – some of the highlights of the new ms.gov
Mississippi aims to solidify its spot as one of the best
government websites in the country with the launch of the all-new
ms.gov, the official website for the State of Mississippi. The
updated website has been built from the ground up with one central
focus in mind – to bring the best mobile experience possible to
users across all mobile devices. The visually striking design,
highlighted by beautiful imagery and bold touch-enabled content
sliders, marks an evolution in mobile web design for ms.gov.
Since the last redesign of ms.gov in 2013, mobile traffic to the
award-winning site has increased by 40 percent, led by a 65 percent
surge in traffic from tablet devices alone. The redesigned ms.gov
took advantage of this data and the new user interface directly
speaks to the touchscreens found on smartphones and tablets with
larger click-targets, swipeable content sliders and an adaptive
design that adjusts based on the device’s actual screen size.
Dr. Craig Orgeron, Mississippi’s chief information officer and
executive director of the Department of Information Technology
Services, describes ms.gov’s mobile approach by saying, “The user
data and feedback we have received shows that Mississippi is
becoming a mobile state. This redesign was focused on those users
that need access to ms.gov and all of its robust content whether
they are on-the-go on their smartphone or at home on their
tablet.”
Additional features of the site include GeoIP mapping with
access to a wide array of State services and locations, a best in
class agency directory, social media channels including ms.gov’s
Flickr page with over 650 user-submitted pictures and a custom
Google search to help users quickly find exactly what information
they are looking for. Dr. Orgeron continued by saying, ”This
feature-rich redesign emphasizes the ms.gov user experience. Our
team focused on delivering innovative technology to citizens across
the State through the site.”
Ms.gov also boasts an impressive amount of user-sourced content
displayed in the touch-enabled sliders for quicker access to the
information that users need, without the user ever having to leave
the homepage. The site displays real-time information including top
searches, Governor’s initiatives, the ability to translate the site
into five different languages, and up-to-date state news, weather
and Amber alerts. Multiple channels are available throughout the
site for feedback and suggestions. It is this user feedback that is
the prime vehicle for continual updates. Beyond the mobile
initiative of the site, this redesign focuses on delivering the
best user experience for the over one million annual visitors who
look to ms.gov for everything Mississippi.
The state’s official website was redesigned at no cost to the
State or citizens utilizing a self-funded model with Mississippi’s
eGovernment partner, Mississippi Interactive (MSI), a subsidiary of
NIC (NASDAQ: EGOV), and the State of Mississippi. Under the
self-funded model the ms.gov designs and enhancements, valued at
more than $500,000, are developed at no cost to the State or the
citizens.
