Oregon Medical Board improves customer access to information and services with streamlined content and mobile-first design

The Oregon Medical Board is launching its newly redesigned website at http://www.oregon.gov/omb, making it easier to interact with the board online. The new site gives citizens, doctors, and other medical providers access to important information by providing streamlined content and a mobile-first design.

To ensure readability, the agency simplified the website content, reducing the total number of webpages by 50 percent. Two rounds of card-sorting studies conducted with citizens informed a simplified navigation, and two rounds of in-person usability studies with Oregonians helped make the design more functional and relevant for visitors. The new website works with ease on any device, including smart phones and tablets.

“The previous website no longer adequately served Oregonians. This new website provides easier access to information, helping to achieve our mission to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of Oregon citizens by regulating the practice of medicine in a manner that promotes access to quality care,” explains Medical Board Executive Director Kathleen Haley. “This entire project took about 14 weeks to complete. We held our team to this aggressive timeline to ensure the new website was ready before our biennial renewal cycle when approximately 17,000 physicians, physician assistants, and acupuncturists renew their licenses with us online.”

The website also includes information on license eligibility and application requirements, filing a complaint and topics of interest such as continuing education requirements and license renewals.

The Medical Board website is leading the way for other Oregon agencies to take on similar website redesign projects. Design principles and lessons learned from their project will be used for other agency website redesign projects. The website was developed at no cost through Oregon’s E-Government Program with the assistance of NICUSA, Inc. (NASDAQ: EGOV) who is under contract to provide services.

About the Oregon E-Government Program

Enterprise Technology Services’ E-Government Program was established through Governor’s Office Executive Order in 2001 and is administered by the Department of Administrative Services. The Oregon Legislature further supports the Program by enacting legislation in 2011 that established an Electronic Portal Advisory Board to advance the effectiveness and delivery of new online services to the public. The Program works with Oregon government organizations to enable them to conduct state business online and improve public access to government information. http://www.oregon.gov/das/ets/egov
