New configurable telecom blade supports Gigabit Ethernet and PCI
Express protocols, upgradeable to Serial RapidIO and 10-Gbit/sec
Ethernet MADISON, Wis., April 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Artesyn
Communication Products, a subsidiary of Artesyn Technologies
(NASDAQ:ATSN), and a leading supplier of blade products for telecom
OEMs, today announced the KAT4000, a new configurable AdvancedTCA
(ATCA) blade for telecom infrastructure applications. The new ATCA
blade, equipped with four AdvancedMC expansion sites, features a
versatile switched fabric with support for Gigabit Ethernet and PCI
Express, and a modular Fat Pipe design that can be upgraded to
support Serial RapidIO and 10-Gigabit Ethernet in the future. The
KAT4000 also features IPMI system management, an optional Freescale
8548 Management Processor, and a multi-channel PICMG 3.1-compliant,
ATCA interface with an aggregate bandwidth of up to eight
Gigabit/sec. "ATCA blades equipped with AdvancedMC expansion sites
provide the ultimate open architecture platform for building
modular, scaleable, field replaceable telecom blades," said Todd
Wynia, vice president of product management at Artesyn
Communication Products. "The KAT4000's four AdvancedMC sites,
high-performance control and data planes, multi-protocol support,
and integrated system management make it easy to configure for a
broad range of telecom infrastructure applications, including
SS7/SIGTRAN signaling, media gateways, traffic processing, wireless
base stations and softswitches." The KAT4000 supports all standard
AdvancedMC modules, including single-width half-height,
single-width full-height, and double-width full-height. Fully
configured, the blade can accommodate up to four modules. To
maximize system throughput and flexibility, the KAT4000 provides
separate control/management and data planes, each with its own
independent switching capability and ATCA fabric connection. The
control/management plane, available with an optional Freescale 8548
Management Processor complex that includes up to two Gbytes of DDR2
DRAM and one GBbyte of NAND flash memory, utilizes separate Gigabit
Ethernet and PCI Express switches to connect each AdvancedMC site
to the ATCA Base Fabric. The KAT4000's data plane, utilizing an
upgradeable Fat Pipe switch, connects each AdvancedMC site to the
ATCA High Speed Fabric. A single Gigabit Ethernet channel links
each AdvancedMC site with the switch, which uses two Gigabit
Ethernet channels to access the High Speed Fabric. The KAT4000's
Fat Pipe switch is implemented as a replaceable module, which will
enable Artesyn to offer a variety of other protocol options in the
future, including PCI Express, Serial RapidIO, and 10-Gigabit
Ethernet. The KAT4000 features a PICMG 3.0 Intelligent Platform
Management Interface (IPMI version 1.5 with ATCA extensions), which
is extended to each AdvancedMC site. This interface, incorporating
dual I2C-based Intelligent Platform Management Buses (IPMB),
enhances system management by making it easy for shelf management
controllers to monitor, control and exchange management with the
KAT4000 and its AdvancedMC modules. The KAT4000 can be readily
configured with a variety of custom and off-the-shelf network
access (WAN and LAN), control, packet/protocol, and media
processing modules. Artesyn's Pentium M-based KosaiPM AdvancedMC
module, for example, makes an ideal control plane processor for
optical and wireless infrastructure. It is also ideal for
augmenting packet processing and routing performance in voice
gateways, and for enhancing protocol processing performance in SS7
and SIGTRAN signaling control points and gateways. Artesyn is also
working with partner Surf Communications to integrate Surf's
DSP-based AdvancedMC cards, which will enable the KAT4000 to offer
triple play media processing for applications such as media
gateways. The KAT4000 complies with all major safety, EMC, and
environmental standards, including IEC60950/EN60950, UL60950, CSA
C22.2, Global IEC - CB Scheme Report IEC 60950), NEBS Telecordia
GR-63, and GR1089 Level 3, FCC Part 15 (U.S. and Canada), and ETSI
EN300386-V1.3.1. Software support for the KAT4000 includes Carrier
Grade Linux. About Artesyn Technologies, Inc. Artesyn Technologies,
