Explosion at Beatrix Mine


Johannesburg, 15 May 2000.   Gold Fields Limited (JSE "GFI", Nasdaq "GOLD" LSE
) regrets to advise that at approximately 03:00 this morning an explosion
occurred some 866 metres below surface at Beatrix No 1 shaft, near Welkom in
the Free State. Seven employees are confirmed to have died in the accident. 

The names of the deceased will be released once the next of kin have been
notified. 

Updates will be issued to the media as soon as more information becomes
available.
