Luxury car maker Daimler AG is recalling over 2.6 million Mercedes-Benz vehicles in China due to a software design problem, the country's top market regulator said Friday.

The German auto maker's Chinese subsidiaries have reported the recall plan, covering imported and domestically-made cars manufactured between 2016 and 2020, to China's State Administration for Market Regulation, the agency said in a statement.

Daimler said the vehicles to be recalled have an issue with their communication modules, which may fail to send accurate location information when an emergency call is triggered during an accident. This may delay rescue efforts and pose a safety risk, according to the Chinese regulator.

Daimler said the problem would occur in "rare cases," and that other automatic and manual emergency call functions remain fully operational.

Last week, Daimler recalled 125,568 cars in China due to a potential fire hazard.
