Volkswagen AG's namesake brand will suspend production for four days longer than originally planned as demand for cars continues to fall and supply chains remain challenged by the coronavirus pandemic.

The German auto maker said late Thursday that production for its Volkswagen car and van marques, as well for its Volkswagen Group Components business, will now remain suspended until April 9.

"An application for an extension of short-time working for a total of 80,000 employees of Volkswagen AG has been submitted," the company said.

The company said it is preparing to restart production, and that it is working on a comprehensive package of measures to protect employees' health when it does.

Almost all of Volkswagen's plants in China have resumed production, and the market there seems to be gradually returning to normal, the company said.
