MICHIGAN VIRTUAL CHARTER ACADEMY CELEBRATES
GRADUATES WITH IN-PERSON COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY
Michigan Virtual Charter Academy (MVCA), an online public
charter school serving K-12 students throughout the state, will
celebrate the Class of 2019 at an in-person commencement ceremony
on Friday, June 14th. The ceremony will take place at 2 pm at the
Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi.
This year, MVCA will graduate over 275 students, a 15% increase
since 2018, with more than 30 students graduating with honors.
Collectively, the class reports having been offered over
$250,000 in scholarships and have been accepted to colleges and
universities across the country, including: Purdue, Lawrence
University, and Michigan Tech. Additionally, MVCA has graduates
planning to enlist in military service through the Air Force, Army,
Navy, and Coast Guard.
“At MVCA, we’re preparing the next generation of leaders, and we
take that job very seriously,” said Randy Rodriguez, Head of School
at MVCA. “We couldn’t be prouder of our talented graduates and
we’re excited about everything that lies ahead for them.”
Agatha Ta-Goetz will serve as Valedictorian and plans to attend
the University of Michigan. Sydney Penrose will serve as
Salutatorian and plans to attend Oakland University. Ms. Ta-Goetz
earned a 4.39 GPA; Ms. Penrose earned a 4.24 GPA. Both students, as
well as Mr. Rodriguez, will be available for media interviews.
MVCA will also award the Al-Haqq Award of Perseverance, an honor
originated in 2018. The award recognizes one student in the
graduating class who overcame significant challenges on the road to
graduation. This year’s honoree is Makayla Jenks, who was in the
foster care system as a child. She will graduate with honors and
plans to attend Michigan State University in the fall.
Students enroll in virtual school for a number of reasons,
including looking to escape bullying, being academically off track,
looking for an alternative to the traditional brick-and-mortar
classroom setting. MVCA students access a robust online curriculum
in the core subjects and a host of electives and attend live
virtual classes taught by state-licensed teachers.
