North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA), an online public charter school authorized by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, will celebrate the Class of 2019 during an in-person commencement ceremony on Wednesday, June 12th. The ceremony will take place at the Kings Park International Church in Durham.

Many assume that attending an online public school like NCVA means that students miss out on “real” high school experiences, but this in-person graduation proves quite the opposite. This year, the school will graduate more than 50 students.

This year’s valedictorian is Noah Homan who has plans to attend North Carolina State University where he will study computer science. Because of NCVA’s dual enrollment program, Noah will graduate from high school with more than a full year of college credits.

Collectively, the Class of 2019 reports it has been accepted to trade schools, colleges and universities across the country including: Elon University, Campbell University, the University of North Carolina Asheville, Guilford Technical Community College, Wingate University, Sandhills Community College, College of Coastal Georgia, North Carolina A&T State University, and Durham Technical Community College.

“Every year, our goal is to help students realize their highest levels of academic achievement. I’m so proud to say our graduates this year have exceeded this goal,” said NCVA Head of School Joel Medley. “NCVA’s Class of 2019 is poised for a promising future—in college, in their careers, and beyond.”

Students enroll in NCVA for a number of reasons—some are looking to escape bullying, some may have fallen academically off track, and others are looking for an alternative to the traditional brick-and-mortar classroom setting. NCVA students access a robust online curriculum in the core subjects of math, science, English language arts, history, art and music and a host of electives, and attend live virtual classes taught by state-licensed teachers.

“As a native North Carolinian, nothing gives me greater pride than seeing our state’s best and brightest achieve their dreams,” said North Carolina Senator Todd Johnson, NCVA’s graduation speaker. “I’m looking forward to seeing what the future has in store for these talented graduates.”
