Florida Cyber Charter Academy (FLCCA), an online public charter school, will celebrate the Class of 2019—the largest graduating class for FLCCA to date—during a commencement ceremony on Friday, June 7th. The in-person commencement will take place at the Church of the Son in Orlando.

Many assume that attending an online public school like FLCCA means that students miss out on “real” high school experiences, but this in-person graduation proves quite the opposite. This year, FLCCA will graduate more than 100 students.

The school’s amazing cohort of counselors help students apply for college and help plan their career path. Part of this work means supporting students in their pursuit of scholarships. During the graduation ceremony, the FLCCA school community will celebrate all of their students’ achievements and highlights—particularly those of Destiny Leonard, Tyona Bowman, and Bethany Pierritz.

Destiny received a $74,000 Danforth Scholarship from Florida Southern College. Tyona received $25,000 in scholarships, including a Merit Honor Scholarship of $10,000. She also received a full ride to the Miami Ad School’s Social Media 10-Week Bootcamp for Social Strategists and Influencers. Bethany received a $17,000 scholarship from Wesleyan University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

In a senior survey, the Class of 2019 reports acceptance to local community and state colleges and universities—including Valencia College, Pasco-Hernando State College, Palm Beach State College, Liberty University, Miami Dade College, and Florida State University. This year’s graduates plan to pursue a number of career paths, including: pediatric nursing, biotechnology, the United States Armed Forces, radiology, cosmetology, dental hygiene, graphic design, and music and entertainment.

“Students and their families have worked so hard to reach this day. We are so very proud of all of our graduates and the diversity of talent and passion they will bring to the world that awaits them,” said Dr. Sandra Anthony, head of school at FLCCA. “I am confident that the personalized education they’ve received in online school has prepared every FLCCA senior for post-graduation success.”

Students enroll in FLCCA for a number of reasons—some are looking to escape the impact of bullying, some may have fallen academically off track, and others are looking for an alternative to the traditional brick-and-mortar classroom setting. FLCCA students access a robust online curriculum in the core subjects of math, science, English language arts, history, art and music and a host of electives, and attend live virtual classes taught by state-licensed teachers.

“Seeing these graduates and hearing their stories makes me more optimistic than ever about our shared future,” said FLCCA Graduation Speaker and Florida Sen. Dennis Baxley. “I know every Floridian shares my pride in everything they’ve accomplished.”
