Passenger-car registrations in the European Union fell in November, declining for the fifth consecutive month this year, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association said Friday.

New car registrations declined 20.5% year-on-year to 713,346 vehicles for the month, said the association, also known as ACEA.

"In volume terms, this result marked the lowest November total on record since 1993," it said.

In the January-November period, registrations for new passenger cars in the EU stood at 8.9 million.

"Eleven months into the year, the impact of the microchip shortage on vehicle output dragged the EU's year-to-date sales performance into negative territory (-0.04%), and this despite 2020's record low base for comparison," the ACEA said.
