Volkswagen AG said on Monday that it has named Thomas Schaefer the new chief executive officer of its namesake Volkswagen brand effective July 1.

The German car maker said Mr. Schaefer, who has been serving as the Skoda brand chairman since August 2020, was appointed chief operating officer of the Volkswagen brand on Friday and will subsequently take over as the Volkswagen brand CEO.

He will also join the Volkswagen group's management board where he will be responsible for the volume brand group.

Current Volkswagen brand chief Ralf Brandstaetter will continue until June 30 and take over responsibilities for the auto maker's China business from Aug. 1 as previously announced.

Klaus Zellmer will take over the role as management-board chairman at Volkswagen's Skoda auto brand from Mr. Schaefer effective July 1, the car maker said.
