STOCKHOLM--Volvo AB said Monday that it has started to test vehicles using fuel cells powered by hydrogen.

Customer pilots will start in a few years from now and commercialization is planned for the latter part of this decade, the Swedish truck maker said.

The fuel cell electric trucks will have an operational range comparable to many diesel trucks - up to 1,000 kilometers - with a refueling time of less than 15 minutes, Volvo said.

The fuel cells will be supplied by Cellcentric, the joint venture between the Volvo Group and Daimler Truck AG, with the JV company planning to build a fuel cell production facility developed especially for heavy vehicles.

Volvo said trucks powered by fuel cells could haul a total weight of around 65 tons.
