Johnson & Johnson said Thursday its talc-based baby powder will be discontinued globally in 2023.

The healthcare-products company said it will transition to an all cornstarch-based baby powder portfolio as part of a worldwide portfolio assessment.

"This transition will help simplify our product offerings, deliver sustainable innovation, and meet the needs of our consumers, customers and evolving global trends," the company said in a statement.

The New Brunswick, N.J.-based company said its position on the safety of its cosmetic talc remains unchanged.

In July, a bankruptcy judge said he would consider appointing an independent expert to assist in evaluating the mass claims linking Johnson & Johnson's talc-based baby powder to cancer.
