International stocks trading in New York closed higher on Friday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts gained 3.1% to 141.23. The European index advanced 3.6% to 132.00 The Asian index increased 2.5% to 173.39. The Latin American index rose 1.3% to 177.50, while the emerging-markets index moved up 2.7% to 292.85.

Barclays PLC was among those whose ADRs traded actively.

The U.K. bank rose 3.7% following its $2.8 billion deal to buy specialist lender Kensington Mortgage Co. Ltd. from Blackstone Inc. and Sixth Street Partners.

Carnival PLC rose roughly 13% after the world's largest cruise line said it no longer expects to turn a profit in the current quarter, continues to anticipate a loss for the full year but expects positive adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization for the third quarter.
