International stocks trading in New York closed lower on Tuesday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts edged down 1.1% to 151.09. The European index ticked down 0.4% to 146.89. The Asian index retreated 2.2% to 174.64. The Latin American index slipped 1.7% to 189.54, while the emerging-markets index tumbled 2.7% to 289.26.

ArcelorMittal SA was among those whose ADRs traded actively.

The steelmaker edged down 0.2% despite the possibility that it may soon renew operations at its idled Fos-sur-Mer blast furnace in the south of France as market conditions improve in Europe. "Signs of a recovery in demand in our markets allow us to envisage a return to two blast furnaces - at a minimum capacity - in April," a spokesperson for ArcelorMittal in France said.

U.K. bank Barclays PLC moved down 1.1% after the company said that it will implement a 1-for-4 reverse split of its iPath Series B S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETNs.
