On October 19, 2016, the National Technical Information Service (NTIS), an agency of the U.S. Commerce Department, announced their intent to enter into a joint venture partnership (JVP) with Berico Technologies, LLC to support data innovation and analytics for federal agencies, in a press release that defined the program as “A Major Milestone for the Data Economy.”

Berico Technologies’ Joint Venture team includes Amazon Web Services, Cloudera, MarkLogic Corporation, Tableau Software, and Virginia Tech Pamplin College of Business, Center for Business Intelligence & Analytics. As stated in the NTIS announcement, the purpose of the JVP is to support NTIS in “making it easier for businesses, government, taxpayers, and communities to access, analyze and use data to strengthen economic growth and create new jobs.” Berico and their team will focus on improving access, interoperability, and search of federal data and data services. The outcome of this work will advance the federal priorities for the Data Economy, such as Big Data, Open Data, Open Access, Cyber-Physical Systems, Smart Cities, and Internet-of-Things.

NTIS chose 35 organizations as eligible JVPs, including large and small businesses, nonprofit organizations, and research groups. As federal agencies request innovative data services from NTIS, their JVPs will have the opportunity to compete to work with NTIS to provide solutions to their data and analytic challenges.
